Holdem Rules
The first thing that is
done before the start of any Texas Hold'em poker game is to get
money in the pot so that a winner is guaranteed winnings. The
players responsible for this are those sitting in the #1 and #2 seat
positions (to the left of the dealer). The #1 player is
responsible for putting in half of the minimum table stake, which is
called the small blind. The #2 player is responsible for
putting in an additional stake equal to the entire minimum stake
amount, which is called the big blind. (Remember that the
dealer position rotates one position to the left each game, thereby
rotating who makes the big and small blind bets at the start of each
game).
When The Blinds
are posted, players will be dealt two facedown cards.
Immediately following is the first betting round, in which all
players can raise (three raises total), call or fold, beginning with
the player in the #1 seating position.
The Flop
comes next, which consists of dealing three face-up cards in the
center of the table. These cards are known as community cards,
and are selectively used by each player to form their poker hands.
The cards always remain in the center of the table, and are used in
a way that by default, helps to make each players hand the highest
it can possibly be.
As soon as the three
Flop cards are finished being dealt, the Second Betting Round
begins, beginning with the player in the #1 seat position again.
All players can bet, raise, call, fold or check, with the maximum
bet or raise being the minimum table stake.
At the close of the
second betting round, The Turn takes place, which is
the addition of a fourth community card. It too can be used in
the same fashion as the previous community cards.
When the Turn card is
revealed, the Third Betting Round immediately begins
with the player in the #1 seat position. This time the bet and
raise amount is worth the maximum stake amount as accorded by the
predetermined stakes of the game.
As soon as the third
betting round is finished, The River card, or fifth
community card is added to the center of the table.
The River segways into
the Fourth Betting Round, which is the last. It
begins the same way as the previous betting rounds, ending when all
players have folded, and/or called each other bets and raises.
Final hands are
revealed, and the highest ranking poker hand wins the total pot,
minus rake amounts as determined by the poker room (4 to 10%
usually).
