Seven
Card Stud Tips
If any poker game
required more bluffing skills than others, Seven Card Stud would be
that game. Stud poker offers no community cards, but still
shows five of a players seven cards to other players at the table.
Just what those other two cards are can make the difference between
one of the best ranked poker hands possible and a hand made of
absolutely nothing.
Aside from good
bluffing, which you can learn by reading the "Bluffing" page tips on
this site, the only skill a stud poker player can rely on is knowing
when to throw in the towel, and knowing when to stay in the game.
This is done by paying attention to other players. And more
fundamentally, knowing the odds of hitting a high ranked poker hand.
Therefore, players should always follow the these tips when deciding
whether to keep playing, or get out before its too late:
-
Up until Fifth Street
(the addition of a third face-up card, making a total of five
cards), keep you hand in the game if it has at least three cards
that have the possibility of forming into a High Straight.
-
Do the same for a hand
that has at least three cards posing the possibility of becoming a
High Flush. If after Fifth Street, the hand does not have at
least four cards with potential of becoming a High Flush or High
Straight, it is wise to fold.
-
If after the first
deal, you are holding a High Pair or Trip, stay in for the entire
game, unless you suspect another player will beat you out.
-
In addition to your
own, pay attention to other players face-up cards. If you
have the highest face-up card sitting on the table, stay in the
game up until Fifth Street. If after Fifth Street, you don
not have a High Pair, or another player has a higher showing card,
it is time to fold your hand.
