Poker Face Not Needed
December 15, 2008
It is interesting to watch a poker game. Everyone has what is called a
“tell” of some sort where when they do a specific thing you can tell whether
they have a good or a bad hand. This is fascinating because many times the
poker game can be won or lost on the basis of the poker game faces.
However, what do you do when you can’t see the other players’ faces? How do
online poker players get a read on their fellow players without watching
them in person, judging what they do with their body or face when they have
a certain hand? They have to learn how to read them online.
It becomes harder to play the game, and tougher to tell what someone is
thinking when you can’t see them face to face. Instead, you have to watch
every hand to see if you can figure out how they play. There may be certain
betting moves that they make when they have a particular kind of hand, or if
there is live chat during the game there might be a specific way that they
talk.
Some sites use poker avatars, which are computer programs that represent the
player. This enables the other players to get a better idea of them and how
they play, but it still isn’t the same as the live deal. Playing online
poker gives you the ability to hide a wealth of knowledge that could be
gained from watching you play.
