Plan Discusses Online Poker
December 30, 2008
A recently requested report from Lund University will be adding the idea of
online poker to its criteria. The report is going to determine what effect the
internet has on Swedish teens and their norms and values. The university
research program decided to add poker as they felt it was a necessary addition with the recent explosion of online casino gambling.
They will be working with various social networking community websites to
compile data regarding the teens, and they are going after some of the more
popular sites. They are working with The Pirate Bay and MySpace to see what
kinds of social patterns they can come up with, as well as the Svenska
Pokerfrbundet which is a poker association. They are trying to see what effect
these sites have on the teens and are accessing areas that governmental
officials don't normally take into consideration.
The project will take four years to completely compile, and they will be talking
with ninth graders from Lund. They are going to talk to them about the normal
social activities that their age group gets into like file sharing and putting
photos and videos on the internet, as well as how they access poker sites and
how they play poker when online.
They say that they have a theory about how people interact on the internet is
different from how they interact in traditional society, and how they handle
money and poker playing is part of that. For many of them they have more access
to poker playing on the internet than they do in traditional society.
