Luck of the Irish
December 21, 2008
It would seem that the Irish had
a good run at the Ladbrokes Poker Million VII poker tournament this past
weekend. The poker tournament was held in London and the top winner was none
other than Marty Smith – a Irishman. He was one of four Irishmen to make it
to the final six players, but he was the only one to take home the top
prize.
Hailing from Belfast, Smith took the top prize of $1 million from this poker
tournament, and says that this is his biggest win yet. He has made more than
$3.5 million during his years as a poker player, but this one was extra
special because of the size and who he was playing against.
He says that he started out badly and had to readjust everything about his
poker game just to stay in the game. He says he thought he was playing a
winning hand that was big, but he wasn’t and it almost knocked him out of
the game. He says that even the bookmakers thought he was out and offered
odds of 66/1 that he wouldn’t win.
With poker being a mixture of skill and luck according to Smith, he simply
played what he was given and did the best he could with it. He says that as
he is a professional gambler he will do as he did with his other wins – he
keeps some but invests the majority of it. He says that he has been lucky as
of late, but that doesn’t mean anything. He says that there are a lot of up
and coming poker players out there, he is only one of them.
