DeBary Says No to Poker
December 15, 2008
The DeBary City Council has voted down a proposition that would allow the
DeBary Town Center and Equestrian park being rezoned. The park was hoping
that by being rezoned they would be allowed to bring in poker, which would
give them more income.
The council voted 3-2 against the rezoning as they didn’t want the horse
track and poker room to come to their small city. Those that opposed it said
that the poker and horse gambling would lead to more crime and traffic, and
they felt that the city had not really taken everything into consideration
when making the proposal.
Mayor George Coleman said that the safety of the roads was his main concern,
and then the crime that he felt would stem from the poker. Both sides of the
poker issue have been at war over it, with the Daytona Beach Kennel Club
putting up billboards calling the poker room a casino and launching websites
against the proposal.
They would have been the poker room’s biggest competitor and it is obvious
that they wanted people to keep coming to their establishment to do any
gambling that they might desire. They have been working for months to keep
the poker room out, and they said that they were pleased with the outcome of
the vote.
They would have also brought in a hotel, shopping, various restaurants, etc.
to bring more income to the town – but they said that they weren’t
interested in the price that would ultimately have to be paid for that
additional income.
