WSOP Sees Return of Begleiter
November 10, 2009
Poker Hall of Fame nominee Mike Sexton has long wished that poker players
would be able to get mainstream sponsors. He has often said that one of his
dreams would be for a poker player to sit down at the World Series of
Poker's final table with somebody's logo on their chests that everyone
recognized. Many credit him for being the first player event have a sponsors
logo back in the early 1990s.
But it seems as though Sexton's dream may have finally become a reality.
Steven Begleiter has shown up with a logo on his shirt that is completely
unrelated to poker. He has a Full Tilt patch logo on his shirt already, but
now it has company from another sponsor. He is now wearing a patch
advertising the American Movie Classic's new miniseries, The Prisoner.
What is interesting is that the logo truly has nothing to do with poker. AMC
is known as a cable television network that usually shows old American
films. They have gotten much more publicity lately with their series Mad
Men, but still nothing in their lineup would suggest a poker sponsorship. It
came as quite a shock to most of the people sitting at the table.
Begleiter is a former Bear Stearns executive, who is now a professional
poker player. It is funny to think that this little patch on a poker player
is doing exactly what it is supposed to do though, it has people talking
about what it is for and that really is the point of advertising. Other
advertisers might want to take a look at that and see where they can get
their logos on the other poker players at the table.
