Poker is a Rich
Man's Game?
November 2, 2008
There is a common belief that poker is a game for the rich and well
educated – which is simply not true. Poker is a game that most anyone who
wants to can learn. It is hard in terms of learning how the strategy of the
game works, but it can be learned. It is also a game that people of any
financial background can play, because you can play for any amount.
Case in point, you and your friends want to play poker, you call get out
your pennies, your buttons, your chips (with no real monetary value) and you
play poker. You don’t have to be a millionaire, or even well off to play the
game for you set the stakes.
Poker is a game that can be played pretty much anywhere you are, especially
if you aren’t playing for cash. Some states have ruled that poker playing
outside of a casino for cash is illegal, and they will prosecute if you are
discovered doing so. However, many others recognize it as the harmless fun
that it is.
In addition to having to learn the different suits and what outweighs what
when it comes to winning, you have to study your opponents. Professional
poker players will say that it is just as important to watch the other
players as it is to pay attention to what is in your own hand. Players have
“tells” or ways that they let you know unconsciously that they have a
certain hand – good or bad. Poker players know that much of the game is won
or lost on these signals.
But the basic fact of the matter is that anyone can play, you just have to
want to learn how to play the game. And once you do, you will surely find
that poker is the game for you.
