Perth Poker Player Out
November
15, 2008
Scott Montgomery came very close to being at the final table during the
World Series of Poker, but missed it after bowing out Sunday night.
Montgomery was poised to win the $9.15 million first prize, but instead will
be watching the game just like everyone else.
The 27 year old player from Perth had gotten to what was called the
“November Nine” in Las Vegas, but he missed the final table. He came in 5th
and was really hoping to do better than that. Everyone thought that he would
do better, as it has been referred to as his “breakout year” but he still
did fairly well for himself.
Coming in fifth place gave Montgomery a win of $3.1 million for the slot,
and you add that to the $1.3 million he had already won heading into the
series, he has done well for himself. However, for Montgomery, as it is for
a lot of poker players, it isn’t about the money. Ok, well, it is kind of
about the money, but it is about coming in first and getting the bracelet
that says you are part of a select group of people who have won the World
Series of Poker.
He started last February with the World Poker Tour’s Las Angeles game, after
spending four years honing his game. He taught himself the ins and outs of
poker, while teaching English in Japan, and has been very successful – but
it is not enough for him. He wants to see that top spot, as do many poker
players.
