Haywood Sheriff Still
Under Investigation
November
25, 2008
Haywood County Sheriff Tom
Alexander is still under federal investigation for allegedly having ties to
illegal video poker. Police say that Alexander has been fully cooperative
with police and has said that he has “nothing to hide.”
The ongoing case against a former Buncombe County Sheriff, Bobby Medford,
regarding his involvement in the video poker case is still ongoing. However,
as the investigation continues, other names like Alexander’s have popped up.
These investigators are trying to get to the bottom of all of this, and are
now targeting Alexander.
The U.S. District Court Grand Jury in Asheville has subpoenaed the payroll
records for Alexander to see if there is any link to poker payoffs.
Alexander makes $78,068 a year according to official records. They are also
questioning those that used to work for Alexander to see if there is any
kind of a tie in to the video poker scandal.
They are looking into his campaigns to see if there were any donations made
by video poker sources and all information is due by December 2nd.
Alexander’s attorney is Asheville base Sean Devereaux. Medford listed
Alexander as one of those sheriffs that he bribed.
Allegedly he was paid $3,300 a month to ignore the illegal video poker
machines. Medford has already been tried and sentenced for his roll in the
video poker scandal. He has received 15 years in prison. Many residents say
that they don’t think that Alexander is guilty of the video poker mess and
just want it all to go away.
