Right Place at Right Time

The idea of being in the right place at the right time can be seen no clearer than in the story of Mike Sexton. To hear him tell it, Sexton reveals that it is simply pure luck that got him where he is today, which is in the Poker Hall of Fame. Sexton says that all of the events that have led him up to this great honor simply started with a whim to try his luck at a poker game.
 
He says that when he got the call that he'd been voted into the Poker Hall of Fame he wasn't sure who to call first for he had so many people to thank over his 25 year career. Sexton is the only one of the nine nominees to get the required 75% vote from the Hall of Fame's voting panel which is made up of the 17 living Hall of Fame members as well as 15 media members.
 
When he played his first game of poker Sexton was simply a Little League coach. He decided to see how he might do at a real poker game and ended up winning it and several thousands of dollars. Realizing that he might have something here he then moved forward with the desire to become a professional poker player and started winning more tournaments then he was losing.
 
He tells the story of one World Series of Poker event where he lost and had picked up his things and was leaving the casino, when he ran into Scotty Nguyen. Scotty told him that he would bankroll him and Sexton agreed to allow him to have 80% of the winnings should he win. Needless to say he made Scotty almost $90,000 that day, and says that only Scotty could pull something like that off leaving himself out of the equation completely.
