Poker Run this Saturday
October 10, 2009
A poker run is a way for bikers to give back to their community. It is
normally simply several hundred bikers who hop from bar to bar in an almost
scavenger hunt type game. Instead of looking for clues or drinks at these
various locations, they go from bar to bar in search of poker cards. These
poker cards they then take with them and when they reach their final
destination, they sit down at a table and whoever has the best hand wins the
run.
What’s really great about a poker run though, is the fact that they are run
for charity. The money that is raised from these poker runs goes towards
some sort of charity which is always decided in advance. Many times you will
see them in an attempt to raise money for volunteer fire departments or for
volunteer rescue services. This latest one though is for youth programs that
are sponsored by the Florence County Sheriff’s office.
The poker run will begin at Doug’s Harley Davidson, located in Florence, and
it will end at Marshall’s Marine in Lake City. T-shirts are for sale at both
the Sheriff’s office and at Doug’s Harley Davidson. The cost is $25 per
hand, and there is no limit on the number of hands that you get.
Participants may also purchase two extra cards per hand.
The first bike leaves at 9 AM, and the last bike will leave it to PM. This
means that the last bike in should be at 5 PM. There will be prizes for
first place, second place, first-place, and of course worst hands. There
will be food and entertainment, which will begin at 1 PM. If you register
ahead of time you will also be eligible for special drawings. You can make
your checks payable to Camp Pee Dee Pride and mail them to the Florence
County Sheriff’s office Attn: poker run.
