Poker Bits and Pieces
October 29, 2009
It was an interesting week in poker with some of the news poker related
because of the subject matter, but some simply related to poker because of
the name of the player.
First up is the fact that the poker site Party Gaming is reporting a down
trend in their revenue. They reported five million dollars less than what
they were reporting last year. Party Poker found themselves in a similar
situation where they were down 8% from their previous years’ revenue. Both
companies say that online poker is remaining a challenge with the passage of
the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, or UIGEA, but that they felt
that they were coping better than many thought they would.
Moving on, the largest tournament in Africa’s history has just ended.
Christophe Savary is the winner of the World Poker Tour Marrakech, and he
beat out 416 players to win the title. He got €377,262 in prize money for
his troubles and could not be happier. They are hoping that next year they
will be just as successful if not more so.
Small scandal on Ultimate Bet, where Tom "kingsofcards" Marchese was accused
of multi-accounting. He was accused by Prahlad "Spirit Rock" Friedman and
Chris "Genius28" Lee. Marchese denies all allegations, but handled it much
better than the last guy that Friedman accused of it. He says that he won’t
pay Marchese anymore.
World Series of Poker Circuit Season has started up again, and they already
had their first event. It was held at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond,
Illinois. Josh Shmerl was the winner, having bested 1,412 entrants to take
the title.
