Big Win for Carter Phillips
September 13, 2009
Poker professional Carter Phillips is thrilled. Phillips has won the five
day Poker Stars EPT Barcelona tournament. The North Carolina native said
that he was shocked at first by the win, but that it is starting to filter
through now. He said that he felt that his poker playing had changed, which
is why he was able to win this time.
Phillips said that he had to learn to discipline the way that he played so
that he was not coming from a place of aggression at the wrong times. He
says that in the other poker tournaments he had a tendency to get too
aggressive in his playing, which is where he made his mistakes. He said this
time he “didn't do anything stupid to lose huge pots" and that is why he
won.
Phillips beat out 478 other poker players to take the trophy, as well as
winning the main prize of Euro 850,000. He says that he is overwhelmed by
the win and really feels that he learned something this time around.
Phillips started the final table play with 4.42 million, which really gave
him a nice lead over the other players. His focus was completely on the
poker game, even though there was a large Spanish population there urging on
one of his opponents - Santiago Terrazas.
Greek player Georios Kapalas was the first to go from the final poker table,
and was soon followed by Canada as Matt Lapossie. Finland's Toni Ojala was
next, followed by UK player Asa Smith. Romanian Mihai Manole was the next to
go, which left British player Marc Goodwin, Phillips, and Terrazas as the
final three.
