Poker and Bingo?
August 10, 2009
Bingo has always been associated with churches and fund raisers and a
pretty harmless way to spend a Saturday night. It has also been associated
with older people as many think that they are the only ones who play it –
however, it hasn’t been that way for a long time. But the one thing that you
don’t normally associate with bingo is poker.
However, it would seem that poker is the new bingo. Those places that used
to offer a fun bingo filled night are becoming less and less while the poker
places seem to be taking over. Then there is the fact that poker playing is
taking over the charity circuit as well – with more and more churches
offering the games for fun.
This of course shocks most churches as they say that bingo is harmless and
that poker is one of the first steps to sin. But those churches that are now
offering poker games to bring in money could not disagree more. They say
that they used to bring in somewhere around $200,000 a year in profits – and
with poker they are making double or triple that amount.
Some places say that they had to start offering poker just to compete with
the rest of the world. They say that as poker becomes more prolific they
have to look for another way of handling their charity organizations,
because bingo just does not have the pull that poker does. They say that if
they don’t offer poker they will see their profits continuing to drop and
they just can’t afford for that to happen.
