Poker Show Will Not Air
August 26, 2009
To each his own, and for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
– poker is not in their repertoire. The church is against poker playing and
gambling and so they are putting the kibosh on a show that is airing as they
say that it is against their community standards.
The church owns KSL Channel 5 – a local station in Salt Lake, Utah. The show
“Face the Ace” is a poker show and the church says that they are refusing to
show it, and that something else will air in its place. They say that they
sat down to see what they might want to do about the poker show and they
agreed that it went against everything that they believed and so they are
choosing to pre-empt the program.
They say that they understand that there are people who want to watch the
poker show but they cannot in good conscience allow it to play on their
station. The show normally airs at Saturday nights at 8 pm, but for the past
two episodes the station has not aired them. The poker show returns next
month but the station will not be airing it.
The show consists of regular players going up against poker professionals to
see how they do. NBC says that the station should not have a problem with
the poker show as the contestants don’t lose any money and therefore it is
not really gambling. They say that the poker players are not playing with
their own money, they are simply playing for the fun of seeing if they can
beat a poker professional or not.
