Michael Phelps: Gold Medal Swimmer and Poker
Player
August 12, 2009
It is no secret that Gold Medal Olympian Michael Phelps also fancies
himself a bit of a poker player. Unless you live under a rock, there is no
way that you have not heard of this swimming success – having broken all of
the swimming records that there are to be had at the moment, as well as
Olympic records in terms of sheer number of medals.
But Phelps has also said that he enjoys playing poker, and once word got out
many poker sites have asked him to come play poker with them. He had said
that he was interested in trying to play at the World Series of Poker, but
has not yet. Many have come forward to see if Phelps might be interested in
poker playing with them, and although he has gone to several events with
some of the biggest names in poker today – he has not entered into any major
events.
WSOP Europe sponsors Betfair asked Phelps if he would like to come play last
year in their poker tournament series and many thought that he might take
them up on it – but still no Phelps. So now the Asian Poker Tour has invited
him for the second year in a row to their 2009 poker event and is hoping
that he might take them up on it. Their event has doubled from last year
with twelve days of poker games for the taking this year.
In an open letter to the swimmer, they referenced his link to the bong
holding incident and said that they would keep him out of trouble. They also
said that they would be more than happy to see him bring President Obama
along as well.
