Phil Hellmuth – Quite the Poker Player
August 31, 2009
For those of you that were hoping for a different subject of the game or
outcome – we are afraid you have been disappointed once again. For once
again, all anyone can talk about is Phil Hellmuth. This guy doesn’t even
have to be in the poker game for people to be talking about him.
The reference of course is that Hellmuth won the World Series of Poker
twenty years ago. Upon doing so he became the youngest poker player to ever
win the Main Event. Then last year Peter Eastgate took that title when he
won the World Series of Poker Main Event. But then Hellmuth won the Main
Event 10 more times after that first win which means he now has more than
any other player in the history of the poker tournament..
Hellmuth has more millions, more endorsements, etc., than anyone else – and
he likes it that way. Most people know of his prowess as a poker player –
but most people also know that he is a bit of a trash talker at the poker
table. Last year he got so carried away that this year they have changed the
rules of sportsmanlike conduct and he and all of the other players will be
held to a higher standard.
The World Series of Poker may be about the best man winning, but many think
that it has simply become more about Hellmuth’s antics and that it is taking
away from the game. Doesn’t matter – he will still get a seat and he will
still take down most – if not all – of his opponents with him.
