Cook County Thinking About Banning Poker
August 13, 2009
DuPage County had banned video poker and now many other counties are
considering doing the same thing. Cook County Commissioners are thinking
that it might be in their best interest to follow suit and ban it in their
county as well. All video poker would be banned in unincorporated counties,
but Cook County is trying to decide if they want to expand their banned area
so that it is larger than what DuPage has going on.
Many residents wanted to know how this would affect Chicago, but they say
that their plan to ban poker would not have anything to do with the city.
The Mayor has already made it very clear that he is in support of the video
poker as it is a great way for the state to bring in additional money for
construction projects that have to be funded in some way.
The commissioners say that they have been talking and they feel the ban is a
good move for them. They say that they are not alone in this idea and that
there are other counties who are also considering a poker ban. Cook County
says that they are not far from introducing an ordinance that would make the
video poker machines illegal and they suspect that there will be many other
counties that are right behind them.
Commissioner Bridget Gainer says that she has spoken to many of the counties
and they have said that they agree and that they have not decided how wide
to throw their net for the poker ban but that they would be making it
illegal.
