Coming Late is a Bad Move
August 29, 2009
There are those that think that time means nothing and that if they come
late to an event it either won’t matter or no one will care. Some people
believe of course that they are so important that if it is important for you
to be on time that people will simply wait for you. Either way, it is not
good to be late – especially to a poker game.
When you are late to a poker game you are at a disadvantage from everyone
else – which is what Andy Bloch discovered when he showed up late to the
World Poker Tour’s $15,000 buy in Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker
Classic. The event was last year, and was held at Bellagio in Las Vegas.
Bloch sat down at the poker table and immediately found himself at a
disadvantage to the other players. Bloch had pocket tens in the cutoff seat
and called a raise to $600 by a middle position poker player. The flop came
and Bloch had a top full house. Then more cards and another raise of $1,000.
Bloch decides to raise $3,000 and his opponent called. More cards and then
opponent checks – Bloch raises $6,000 and his opponent folds.
Bloch later said that if he had been their earlier that he would have seen
how this particular player played his hands and would have been able to get
more out of him. However, as he came late he pushed too hard and the poker
hand was over. He said that it is important to always come on time for a
poker game because you never know what you might miss that might end up
being very valuable later on.
