California is Getting Poker
August 14, 2009
California has long been pushing to do a kind of intrastate online poker
or online gambling and they say that they have the right to offer it so they
are going to do so. They say that intrastate gambling is not included in the
Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act or UIGEA and so it is up to the
states to decide what they want to do. This is exciting for the online poker
community, especially since they have always maintained that they were
exempt from the UIGEA anyway.
The tribal casino operators say that they are ready to work with their long
time “foes” in order to get poker online in the state. They are going to
lobby to get online poker and if they have to pair up with their competitors
to do that they are more than willing to do so.
Up until now the tribes have fought against poker rooms coming in as they
maintained that it took away from their earnings at their casinos. There are
some tribes that argue that by bringing in online poker they are violating
the federal laws that say that you cannot have poker playing or gambling off
of tribal land.
The Morongo tribe says that they have to come together to offer poker,
especially since state lawmakers seem to be in favor of it as well. They
know that if they offer online poker they will be able to make more money
for the state which is so desperately needed right now to balance their
budget.
