Bipartisan Movement to Legalize Online Poker
August 9, 2009
It is funny the things that will unite Republicans and Democrats. Usually
it is something like a Hurricane or some kind of natural disaster that has
to happen for them to come together on anything. It certainly isn’t our
economy – for they would rather see our country fail than do what it right
for its citizens. But lately we have seen them come together – for poker.
Yes, that’s right, our political parties seem to be putting aside their
problems with each other and joining hands across America to legalize online
poker.
It started with a bill from a Democrat that a Republican quickly added their
support to. The overturning of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement
Act or UIGEA is the topic of conversation lately. It was Republicans that
first made online poker illegal, and many thought it would be Democrats who
made it legal- but it seems as though both sides want to see change in a big
way.
There are of course those online poker sites that have never stopped
allowing players to play at their site. They have gotten around the ins and
outs of the law somehow and are still allowing US patrons to play poker at
their sites. The poker industry of course supports such sites as they feel
that they have never really been under the umbrella of the UIGEA until the
government seized their bank accounts.
Then Republicans and Democrats alike stepped forward to throw their support
behind the bill. They say that they don’t see anything wrong with allowing
poker playing online, and they also see it as a great way to bring in
additional funds for the US. Who says we can’t all just get along?
