Poker Player Tips
July 8, 2009
New poker players often end up losing at a table where people know what
they are doing not just because they understand the game and the strategies
that follow the game, but they understand several basic rules that go along
with the playing of poker that if you don’t know you won’t really be
successful. There are ways of winning that have nothing to do with your
skill and all with how you play the game itself.
One of the first things you have to know is that you should not play money
that you do not have. It seems like a simple rule, but you would be amazed
at the number of people who don’t follow that advice. Only play at tables
that you can afford to keep up with the big boys. You should also play good
hands that you are comfortable with. Play hands that involve a lot of Aces,
or Queens, whatever, before you start trying for full houses.
Find out what your options are. All poker players have a game that they are
best or worst at – this means that they play to their strengths and don’t
play those games that they don’t like or just are not good at. Some people
learn to play HORSE and then stick with it their whole lives and are
perfectly happy with it
Go into the game drug and alcohol free. If you are an established poker
player you know what your strengths and weaknesses are – but if you are a
new player you don’t know your limits yet, so don’t mess up your chances
with something that will only cloud your mind and your judgment. Finally,
what seems like a funny and weird thing, don’t riffle your chips if you
don’t really know how to do it. There are people who will sit there riffling
away and everyone at the table can see that they are not very good at it and
they will see how many pots they can take from you.
