Newell Holding Poker Run
July 23, 2009
Poker players love a good poker run, because not only does it add to the
excitement of playing a good game of poker, but it also gets them out from
behind a gaming table. These are both good reasons for participating in a
poker run, but then add to the pot the idea that it is for charity and you
truly have a winning combination for your players.
This particular poker run was to benefit the Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital,
and it is being put on by the Newell Volunteer Fire Department. Each year
they hold a poker run and they send some of their proceeds to a good cause
and use the rest of the money to maintain their equipment and get in things
that they sorely need as a volunteer fire department.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Tim Steele, this is the first year they
have decided to donate all of their poker run proceeds and they hope to be
able to do it with all of their runs in the future. They say that they
normally get around 30 riders in the poker run, and it covers roughly 100
miles. There are places to eat and drink along the way if they choose to
stop and when they finish they will end up back at the firehouse.
When they come back each one draws their poker hand and whoever has the best
hand wins the cash prize, with all of the rest of the money going to the
Burn Unit at the hospital. There will be other prizes as well as a $5 pig
roast at the end of the day. The poker run costs $10 per person and
donations are accepted as well.
