Celebrities Play Poker for a Cause
July 9, 2009
There are many reasons to play poker and usually it is to fatten your
wallet. However, there are those times when playing poker is something that
can do good for someone other than yourself. Every now and then there are
poker sites that offer ways to benefit some sort of a charity, but when it
comes to giving big time no one does it like celebrities.
Ante Up for Africa is a poker game for celebrities by celebrities. Actor Don
Cheadle has long been involved in trying to help Refugee International’s
attempts to help the people of Darfur and the Sudan. He has been trying to
raise money for years that might make it a little easier for these people to
live, and Cheadle is constantly looking for ways to raise money to make
their lives a little better.
He has teamed up with Annie Duke, a well known professional poker player, to
create Ante Up for Africa. All of the proceeds of this poker tournament will
go towards the efforts on behalf of these displaced people. There are
several well known poker players there as well – Ben Affleck has long been
known for his poker playing and the fact that he has been so successful at
it. He and his buddy Matt Damon were among those who came to help out
Cheadle and Duke and raise money for the cause.
They were joined by other big names such as Sarah Silverman, Jennifer Tilly,
Brad Garrett, Dean Cane, Mike Tyson and Charles Barkley. Each of these
celebrities were there to help the people of Darfur and the Sudan and they
were very successful in raising a lot of money for the cause.
