Brunson Has His Day
July 11, 2009
Doyle Brunson is one of the best known professional poker players out
there today. Brunson is by no means a young man, but from looking at him and
watching his behavior you would not think that he was 75 years old. He is
easily one of the most watched poker players out there, and has shown those
that came after him, as well as before him, a thing or two about poker.
And Brunson finally got his due as professional poker players from around
the world gathered on the eve of the World Series of Poker’s first day of
registration to honor this long time poker player. The WSOP was celebrating
40 years of being in business, and Brunson was celebrating even more years
of playing poker.
The poker celebration took place at Wynn Resort’s nightclub Blush, and you
could tell that they were not being as strict as they normally were. Brunson
himself showed up in a cowboy hat, and for a dress code that does not
normally allow that sort of thing exceptions were made all over the place.
Brunson was able to say that he had been there for almost all of the 40
years of WSOP madness, and that he had only missed one or two poker games
over the years. He was the first to win the main event twice and the first
to do it in consecutive years. He also has ten poker bracelets, which is
more than many players could ever hope to get.
He says that he has come a long way from playing illegal poker in back rooms
and halls hoping that the police would not find them. Now he plays on
television with the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and people ask for
his autograph. He says that poker playing has changed substantially over the
years, and he expects that it will change more from here on out.
