New WSOP
Documentary
July
31, 2008
The new
Documentary about the 2005 World Series of Poker is underway, and has a
working title of “Pass the Sugar.” The movie industry has tried over the
years, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, to make a movie about poker.
The last and probably one of the best movies about poker was “Rounders” back
in 1998. Director Gil Cates, Jr. is working on the latest attempt and this
will be his sixth movie that he has directed. This is the second one that
has a poker theme however.
Earlier this year, Cates released “Deal” which was also about poker and had
Burt Reynolds, Shannon Elizabeth and Bret Harrison in it. It was a box
office bomb.
Cates is also known for “Life After Tomorrow” and “Midsummer’s Night Rave.”
He has directed television as well- and has been a producer and an actor. He
may best be known for his sibling – the actress Phoebe Cates, and his father
Gil Cates, Sr. – the film producer.
This new attempt at the poker movie is about the 2005 WSOP where Joe Hachem
won the whole kit and caboodle. Upon winning, the Lebanese poker player
shouted, “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie,” and then moved to Australia.
