MADD and Poker Go Well Together
July 17, 2008
The Sober Riders Motorcycle Association has been working with Mothers
Against Drunk Drivers for more than seven years now, and it is always with
positive results. The SRMA recently held their seventh annual Poker Run on
Sunday and were once again successful.
The poker run raises funds for the Calgary chapter of MADD with all of the
proceeds going towards the charity. Keith Williams was the organizer of the
event, and he said that the reason they do it is to get awareness out there
about the dangers of drunk driving.
Many people think that they can drink and drive because they have never been
stopped, or they don’t realize how impaired their judgment is due to the
alcohol. Williams says that he himself has been the victim of a drunken
driving accident, where he was hit by an impaired driver.
He says not only has he been a victim but he has many friends who have as
well, a couple of whom were killed by impaired motorists. He wants to point
out that not only are you hurting or killing someone when you get into an
accident while impaired, but you are hurting their families – their children
– when you take them away from them.
The group was able to give MADD $10,260 this year from the poker run, which
will go toward education and awareness programs. There was even a check from
Pro-Am Motorcycles on top of that for an additional $500.
