Poker Tables Still Running
June 24, 2008
No matter what people might think, the economy cannot be as bad as they
think it is. All you have to do is take a look at the poker tables to see
that people are still playing the same as they did before, and in many cases
before. There does not seem to be any kind of economic problem there.
Take a look at this year’s World Series of Poker finals, where there were 55
events at the Rio All-Suites Hotel in Las Vegas. So far, it has broken all
registration records for a WSOP event.
The first event was on May 30th and it was a $1,500 buy-in, No Limit Texas
Hold’em event. There were almost 4,000 players brought into the event. Last
year they had almost 1,000 players less, and the prize for the event was
$794,000.
The only event that will not be breaking records is the main event which has
a $10,000 entry fee. They had hit record numbers for that event in 2006 with
8,773 players and they don’t expect to get more than that. This event will
begin July 3rd.
With the legislation that was passed that has curtailed online poker playing
and gambling, they saw a drop in registrations for the main event. With that
legislation came a new policy from the WSOP that they would no longer be
accepting entries from online gambling sites and this led to many players
not being able to play their way to the main event.
