South Carolina Looking
at Legal Poker
May
14, 2009
Poker is a popular game no
matter how you look at it. Across the nation, across the world, people are
playing poker in droves. They are turning in to watch other people play
poker on their televisions. They enjoy the game of poker and it isn’t going
anywhere any time soon. However, some states are a little slow with the
uptake, and don’t realize that poker playing is truly the mass craze that it
has become.
South Carolina is one of those states. They are fighting a law that was set
more than 200 years ago that says that any games with cards or dice is
illegal in the state. Now not only does this law pertain to poker, and all
other card games, but it also applies to things like Chutes and Ladders and
Monopoly if taken literally. Lawmakers are trying to change the law to make
it a little more in tune with the times but they are getting some
resistance.
Some residents don’t want to see the law overturned because they say that
their state is doing just fine without having poker. They say that if they
bring in poker they are going to end up with a bunch of gambling addicts.
Those that are for the law say simply that if they are against changing the
law to allow poker then they need to take out the games from their kids’
rooms and throw them away because they are illegal as well.
Obviously there are those that are taking it to the extremes, but lawmakers
are pushing forward to see if they can get online poker playing made legal
as well as other card and dice games. Many residents say that they find it
important that they be able to play board games or a friendly game of poker
and not have to worry about breaking the law.
