It’s Nice to be a Winner
April 7, 2009
Marty Smyth has it made – he hosted a poker event and then won it himself –
not so bad for a days work. Smyth was hosting the Omaha tournament as part
of Boylepoker.com’s Be Our Sponsored Pro competition that they are running.
However, he managed to beat all of the other players and win his own
tournament.
Smyth was up against 46 other players in the poker tournament, and won that
event. Then he went against eight other online qualifiers from various poker
sites who were part of a live tournament in Dublin’s Jackpot Club on March
28th. The winner of the tournament would have gotten a sponsorship package
from the poker site that had paid entry and expenses for the Irish Open
2009, the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Manchester Main Event, and the World
Series of Poker $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Event.
Since the winner was the host, Smyth was not eligible for the prize package.
The rules clearly stated that should Smyth win the poker tournament that the
prize would go to whoever came in second place – a gentleman by the name of
Noel Magner. Smyth said that although he was thrilled at the way he played
the poker game, he was just as thrilled at seeing Magner get the poker
package because he said that he played a “fantastic” game.
Smyth says that he isn’t done playing, or giving away prizes. He will
continue to play at the poker site and to see how many sponsorships he might
be able to pass on to other poker players.
