Poker Run for Money
April 29, 2009
It was time for the 9th Annual Chatham County Sheriff’s Poker Run, and
residents could not have been more excited about it. A poker run is a great
way to raise money, and they have been used by various charity groups
throughout the years. The way a poker run works is that you set up a line of
places for people to come to in order to pick up a poker card. They then
create poker hands from those poker cards that they have picked up at the
various establishments.
Whoever ends up with the best poker hand at the end of the run is the winner
– and it is decided once all of the players have returned with their cards.
It is a fun way to play poker, and a terrific way to raise money for your
organization. Quite often it is bikers that participate in it, but there are
no rules that say you can’t include other forms of transportation as well.
Chatham County did it with bikers and they had more than 600 show up for the
event. They came from as far away as North Carolina to participate in the
Georgia event. The Sheriff’s office holds the fund raiser once a year, and
it is the only fund raiser that they run. They use it to raise money for
their favorite charity – kids.
The Sheriff’s department purchases gifts for the children of Chatham County
and they use the money from the poker run to fund it. They do the shopping
and the delivery of the presents to ensure that every child has a Merry
Christmas. This year the poker run raised more than $26,000 for presents.
