Hevroy Takes Poker Title

March 30, 2009

It was a real toss up as to who would take the title of poker champion at the Latin American Poker Tour Main Event at Punta del Este in Uruguay – but when the smoke cleared it was not Alejandro De Arruabarrena of Argentina as many thought it would be. Instead, it was Karl Hevroy of Norway who took the title.

Hevroy spent the entire day at Friday’s final table in the lead, but many thought that Alejandro would take it – they felt he was the stronger player. However, Hevroy never let up and took the table time and time again – and took home the first place prize of $283,500. Between the two of them they cleared the table, but Hevroy was just ahead of him the whole way – and in the end it was Hevroy who took the final hand of the final table.

Andre Ventura of Brazil was the first to go, when he missed out on a jack to stay in the game. Hevroy was already out ahead of the second place spot, which at that point was dominated by Angel Guillén of Mexico. Hevroy had $1.2 million which was more than twice that of his second place rival. Next to go was Magno Aragao also of Brazil, and he was followed by Bolivar Palacios of Panama. Waldemar Cogo of Brazil left in sixth place, leaving Canadian Oliver Rowe in a good position to do well in the game. However, Hevroy took him out and he ended the day in fifth place.

Quickly behind him, literally fifteen minutes later, American Ron Wasiel was eliminated, and Guillén was taken out for the third place spot. This left the final two for heads up play and Hevroy had nearly $3 million in chips to De Arruabarrena’s $543,000. They broke for dinner and shortly there after Hevroy won the tournament.
