Deaf Poker Australia
March 12, 2009
Deaf Poker Australia is just one of several deaf poker clubs around the
world. They get together and play poker in some of the biggest tournaments
around, and they are for the hearing impaired only. At some of the events
they allow the hearing to play as well, but they limit the number of those
that they allow because the focus really is on those that cannot hear.
It is a great way for poker players that can’t hear to get to hang out and
play with other players with similar needs as theirs. Now those in Australia
will also get the chance to play some amazing poker with others that are
deaf. The group is trying to host their first Australian Deaf Poker
Championship for this upcoming August.
Sokong Kim, the founder of Deaf Poker Australia, says that he is working
with the Australian Poker League to get enough sponsorship dollars to make
it a free event. This way all of the money that is raised in the poker game
will go toward the prize pool minus the tournament costs.
The US National Deaf Poker Tour has its own event coming up in Atlantic City
this month. They will be at the Trump Taj Majal, and it is one of three
events that they already have scheduled for this year. The biggest
difference between deaf poker games and regular games is simply that sign
language is the “official” language at the table. Other than that, they are
simply playing poker.
