World Series of Poker Home Closing
February 3, 2010
It may not be used anymore, but the closing of the hotel Binion’s is a sad
state of affairs for poker players. The hotel was once the home of the World
Series of Poker, but is now an empty building that has to be closed down.
The WSOP used the hotel as their home base up until four years ago when they
moved it to the Rio which is located across town.
The owners of the hotel, TLC Enterprises say that they have plans to reopen
it some day – but they don’t know when they will be able to do that. They
also own the nearby property Four Queens on Freemont Street, and they say
that they have no idea with the drop in spending and travel to Las Vegas
when they might be able to bring back the landmark.
The hotel has been around since 1951 and according to some guests still has
the same amenities now that it did then. Some say that the televisions are
still the old dial kind and internet is like some foreign place to them. The
hotel says that they cannot offer the same things that the others can, and
that they don’t have the ability to be competitive any longer.
When asked, the poker players said that it was a love/hate relationship with
the hotel. They said that it was definitely a tradition to be able to play
the WSOP there, but it was also a terrible hotel. They aid that those that
played the World Series of Poker there definitely miss the feel of the
place.
