No Police, Only Poker
February
29, 2009
Graham Hall was not having a
good day. In fact, it seemed that no matter where he turned, he was not
going to get any help at all. Hall was first the victim of a crime, and then
he was a victim of the police. Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of
bed.
Hall went to the Kidlington Office of the Oxfordshire police headquarters to
report a robbery and the guard on duty asked him if he was there to join the
poker game. Hall said that he was not there to play poker, rather to report
that his home had been broken into. The guard told him that he would have to
come back then to report his crime because no one was there to help him.
The guard told him that it was poker night at the station, and therefore no
one would be able to service the call. Hall said that he was greeted with a
“Good evening sire, are you here for the poker?” It seems that the location
where he went to report his crime is not an operational station, and thus
they were all off playing poker.
Then he tried to go to the Kidlington Police Station, but it closed early
due to the fact that it was the middle of the week. So he called the police
non-emergency hot line to report it and they gave him a crime number. The
poker game was a charity event, and attended by all off duty personnel.
