Stepping Away From
the Table
A large percentage of
poker players, especially online poker players, would agree that it
can be difficult to step away from a table. Whether it comes
from a place of wanting more money to add to your already
substantial pot, or, to win at least one good-sized pot before
stepping down makes no difference. The bottom line is that
poker, like any game or form of gambling, has the potential of
becoming addictive.
Online poker, unlike its
land-based predecessor, allows players to join a game twenty-four
hours a day, seven days a week. For those players who have
reached a level of semi-continual success, it is very easy to tell
oneself they could be making money right now if only they were on
the computer playing online poker. And now that hand-held
PDA's, mobiles and more compactable laptops give access to online
poker, the temptation to give in to the allure of winning even more
money is very strong.
Even those players who
admit that poker has taken up every spare moment in their lives,
will concede that a break, downtime, stepping away, or whatever you
want to call it, is necessary for keeping one's life and health in
order. Instead of looking at your time away from the poker
table as a missed opportunity to win some money, take the outlook
that many professionals like Daniel Negreanu take, which is that
your time away from the table is a positive expectation for return.
If you use this time wisely to refresh your mind and center your
focus, you will be amazed just how much better you will play in the
long run - and to not have to depend solely on luck.
