Selective Aggression
Poker
It seems that a general trend
is starting to sweep many no-limit Holdem games. Larger pots and more aggressive players
are turning out more at the poker rooms, which may be explained by
the increase in beginning, inexperienced players, that in turn, are
largely being nurtured by the media broadcasting celebrity poker
tournaments and the World Series of Poker on ESPN and the Travel
Network.
It looks as if these
newer poker players do not understand what it means to play a
no-limit game of Holdem - Or if they do, they are not grasping the
difference between playing a no-limit game with two other players as
opposed to nine other players. For instance, if you were to
sit in on a lower limit game at an online poker room that attracts
inexperienced players (need I name them?), you would likely see
players going head-to-head with low pocket pairs.
What these players are
failing to realize is that they will lose most of the time with low
pocket pairs. Even a pocket Ace is not going to be enough most
of the time. The defense these players give is that they make
a lot of money when they do win. However, unless they do so
before going on a losing streak and quitting while they are ahead,
they will invariably lose their bankroll in the long run.
The solution to this
type of inexperienced poker playing is called "Selective Agression",
which is a valuable tool to use for calling out other players bluffs
and for building the pot when you are positive your hand is in the
upper percentile for its chances of winning - not when you have a
mediocre hand.
