Practicing what we preach when gambling (part 1)

September 18, 2006

As I am totally sure, many of you online casino article readers out there must be wondering if people like me who write informational and helpful gambling articles actually practice what they preach to their readers.

You are probably wondering if people like me play blackjack strictly by the strategy rules that are recommended by myself. You are probably asking yourself if online casino tips writer all play progressive slots using the max bet each and every time. These are valid questions. But I must be honest; I deviate from the typical blackjack strategy that I recommend to players – but only sometimes and in rare instances. As far as slots go, I don’t play them – but I stick by my recommendation that if you are playing a progressive slot, you should be betting the max. If you can’t afford to – find another machine.

All in all, you must stick to the real and true recommended strategies to any casino game or you will lose money – odds are odds, expectation is expectation. In the long run, it is the best way to play. I am not going to tell you that you can never sit at a blackjack table and win money by bucking the system, but it will only happen in the short term. What comes around goes around, and the strategy that is essential for certain games is just that a strategy.

This goes for the same when you  play craps. Stay with the bets that provide you with the best percentages and forget about the one roll proposition bets already.

The same is fore blackjack (yes, I said that I sometimes deviate from this recommended strategy – but I didn’t say I won when I did it), I f I get a blackjack dealt to me I definitely go for the full 3 to 2 pay off and never except the even money insurance wager – ever. If the dealer has blackjack – so be it, but in the long run and considering the odds of this actually happening – I made the right decision.

Recently, I was sitting a great video poker game and I found myself really trying hard to stick to what I preach when it comes to video poker strategy. I am speaking specifically about the fine game of Double Bonus Poker. I was playing a quarter 9-7 game which provides a payout of just over 99% if played expertly and to the tee.

This is what happened to me, I was dealt a sweet little full house, Aces over Kings (come on). For the specific game I was playing this was a forty five coin payback because I was betting five coins at a time ($1.25) – that would be the payout if I was to keep the five cards I was dealt. This is where it gets interesting folks; the expert recommendation for this actual hand isn’t what you would think at all. It is not recommended that the player keep the pat hand – the full house they were dealt. This is one of the most interesting situations of the expert strategy recommended play for Double Bonus Poker. What is really recommended is to discard the full house by keeping the Aces and ditching the 2 kings. Heartbreaking, but this is what you have to do if you want to play the expert strategy. Oh what a test this was. As any expert would recommend, it has to be done and I did it.

This is why, I was wagering 5 coins for this specific game and because I was, four Aces would have won be an amazing 800 quarters! Now, if you were playing say Jacks or Better and other video poker games where four Aces pays only 400 quarters, you would want to keep the full house and except your plight.

Now keep in mind, you wasn’t assured of anything by wrecking my full house, it is just the best plan in the total concept of playing this specific game to its fullest potential. Video poker strategies are not the easiest to follow because of certain temptations they impose on players, but if you want o play it right you have to play it the way it is recommended to a tee. So, yes I practice what I preach.
