Texas Holdem tricks for playing the river

In this section we will go over the navigation of the river. We will cover how to play the river card when playing Texas Holdem. Assuming you already understand the rules of this popular online poker game, these tips for playing the river will help indeed.

Whether you are a beginner or not, be sure to take these following tips into serious consideration when playing this game.

At this point the poker game is getting down to the nitty gritty and if you are still in the gane, you better have a good hand to back it up – or you totally believe you can psyche your opponent into thinking you do and they fold – which is very rare at this point in the game.

So if you are still in the game at this point, you need to have a strong hand or a very good draw that will become the best hand in the game if you hit it.

If you are playing against reasonably prudent Texas Holdem players, there will probably only be 2  of you left in the game – sometimes 3. Before the last card, many strategic considerations are predicted on your chances for subsequent improvement in your hand. Meaning, you could bet a hand consisting of a pair and a four flush. Together, your pair, along with the potential of drawing a flush on the river on top of the possibility of bettering your hand to include two pair or evn three of a kind, makes it worth playing on.

Once the river card is dealt your hand has no more potential value, your hand is realized and complete. It can not get any better – it can not get any worse. Say, your flush draw did not materialize. You would be left with a pair – it may not be strong enough to win the hand. Even more important, your strategic ideology has to also change. You now have no more potential for making decisions based on it.

If you make your draw in the river, you can check a flush if you are first to act, hoping to be able to checkraise – getting another bet out of your opponent(s). Or you can straight out bet right away. If you checkraise here, it is advised to do it when you think you will have the best hand most of the time you are called. Also, you need to be sure at this point that your opponent will bet if you check. You don’t want to check a strong hand only to find that your opponent(s) will check, too. Especially when you know they would have called if you did make a bet. You want to win more money right?

If you have the top pair on the river, it can be tedious to decide what to do when you are still up against a couple of other players. You must decide whether to check or bet when the other player(s) acts first, should you call – fold or raise. Decisions are harder to make in this situation. But, if you have been observant to what the other player(s) have done until this point, you decision will be a bit easier.

Below, are some recapped tips to understand when you are playing the river:

-          After the river card is realized, your hand can not improve or get any worse. It is a complete hand – whether you made your draw or otherwise. Your hand has no more potential to improve.

-          At this point, your choice to check or bet if no other player has acted yet – or to get out of the game, call, raise, or even reraise if there has been action – can only be based on your hand’s realized value.

-          If you make two pair, it will typically be the best hand. But, if the turn or river brings a third suited card into the board, be weary – someone may have drawn a flush.

-          When your are only up against one other player at this point in the game and the pot has a lot of money in it, it’s always better for you to be conservative and end up calling with a losing hand than to fold with the winning hand. It happens, and when it does – it isn’t pretty.

-          Overcalling demands a hand strong enough to beat worthy calling hands when playing Texas Holdem.

All things considered, Holdem is a fun, but dramatic poker game. It demands a bit of skill to play and is more complex than some of your other choices from poker games will be. This game is so popular that many beginners just dive right in without getting a grasp on how to play it properly. Don’t be one of these people – especially if you are playing for real money. If you are new to Holdem, try playing free games online first to get a feel for the different parts of this great game. Playing this poker game takes more patience than other casino games, and to play it well – you have to posses some patience. You are not going to be able to get all the way to the river on most hands you are dealt, so patience is a definite virtue when playing this game. Always try to have a good time and you will improve your game easier ,too.
