While
we realize that it is not any easy task to read your
opponent when playing at online poker rooms, there are
still things that you can learn from the basic
understanding of how to read your opponent when playing
poker.
These
days, more and more online poker rooms are hosting
regular games where players can play the same people on
a regular basis. For instance, at many online casino
poker rooms you can now set up your own regular game
with a certain group of online poker players that you
have played before and have a good connection with.
Because software technology has done its very best in
creating online games that are really realistic, you
will certainly come to find that some of these tips are
universal and can be used whether you are online, at a
land based casino, or at a home game. Either way, it
will not hurt to read this section in order to get a
better feel for reading poker opponents. After all,
paying attention to your opponent’s actions whether
online or in front of you at a table in a land based
casino or whatever is important to your ability to win.
Here
are some great tips to get a feel for the other players
you are up against:
-
Look
for tells. Tells are telltale signs from
which you can figure out, for instance, whether or not
your opponent id bluffing – just by taking notice of
their particular mannerisms at the moment. Tells come in
two forms 1. Those who coming from players that do not
know that they are providing a tell. 2. Those that are
from actors who know they are providing the clue and are
doing it on purpose.
-
Learn
to tell if your opponent is an actor or not. This will
let you be able to weed out what they are really doing.
-
Look
for trembling hands. Shaking hands are not an act. If a
person’s hand starts to shake and they make a bet, it
usually means that they are nervous and are bluffing.
-
Jittering. Like a shaking hand is usually not an act
either. Jittering is common in impatient poker players.
If a player is nervously twitching his leg, bouncing it
up and down quickly and makes a bet – the leg keeps
twitching - then you go to make your bet and thhe leg
stops moving. This is a sure sign of weakness and
usually means the player is bluffing.
-
Shrugging and quiet voices. This is an act. If your
opponent shrugs their shoulders and makes a bet with a
well okay attitude, this usually means they don’t
want you to know they have a good hand.
-
Staring at you. If your opponent is staring at you, it
is usually a dare. This is typically done to prevent you
from betting.
-
Looking away. This is usually an act, but can be a bit
more unpredictable than a player starting at you can be.
Either the player is distracted and not into the hand –
so why risk a bet? – or the player is acting to fool
you. Either way, this is unpredictable.
No
matter where or who you are playing, be sure to consider
things such as how a person reacts after they have
looked at their cards. See if they hesitate to reach for
their chips.
When
playing poker online and you are playing in a regular
game with the same players on a regular basis, you will
be able to even hone in on some nuances online, too.
Some players will be chatty, some quiet, watch betting
patterns and pay attention to the game even if you have
folded out of a hand.
