Poker Basics -  Game play

Poker is a simple casino game to learn. No matter if you choose to play it online at an online poker room or anywhere else. Many players spend a lifetime trying to master it, as long as you get that playing poker takes a bit of talent and the ability to have self restraint, you should do just fine. In this article we will cover the basics of actual game play.

When playing poker, you win money by winning pots. The pot contains all the money that was wagered during the hand. Wagers are mad by all the players that are playing in the hand. Assuming you already understand the ranking of poker hands, this article will be of great service to you.

You can win a hand in two different ways

-          You show down or possess the best ranking hand at the conclusion of all the betting rounds. When two or more players are still in the game at the end and all bets have been made, they reveal their cards. The pot is won by the player with the best ranking hand of poker.

-          All other players have folded. You win the hand if all of the other players in the game have decided to release their hands and remove themselves from the hand. If all players relinquish their hands and you remain – you win the pot. In this situation, you may have been holding the best ranking hand at the end or you were bluffing. Either way, you still win. When all others drop out – you win the pot.

Poker games like 7 Card Stud and Texas Holdem require that the highest ranking hand wins the pot. Other poker games such as Lowball and Razz require that the lowest ranking hand of poker wins the pot.

Split pot games have two winners. The highest ranking hand and the best lowest ranking hands are both winners and they share the pot 50-50. If you are interested in split pot games, check out Seven Stud/8 or Omaha/8. both of these poker games are split pot games. Be aware, in split pot games, a high hand will always be made, but a low hand may not. If so, the entire pot goes to the high hand winner.

Most poker games require players to place ante bets or blind bets (See the betting terms article if you don’t understand these bets). If antes are used in the poker game you are playing, each player in the game must put in a certain amount of money into the pot before any cards are dealt. If a blind bet is require in the poker game you are playing, one or two poker players must make a bet or part of a bet before any cards are dealt in the hand. Blind bets rotate around the table so each player gets an equal shot to do so.

Every time a round of cards are dealt in poker games, players will then have the chance to check, bet, fold, call, or raise. Any time a poker player chooses to give up interest in the poker pot, they must fold when it is their turn to do so. When a player folds, they are out of the hand, they can no longer contest for the pot and do not have to add any more money to the pot either. If a poker player bets or raises and no one calls the bet, the pot goes to the player that bet or raised. The hand is then over. If there are still two players contesting the pot at the end of all the betting rounds, the best ranking poker hand wins the pot.

Keep in mind, there are always different rules for each specific poker game that you can play. All in all, poker is pretty simple when it comes to understanding the basics.
