Poker Betting Terms
For those of you
who are new to playing poker or even online casinos, there are a few
terms you will need to completely understand before placing any bets
on poker. These terms are used quite frequently when playing poker.
Whether you want to enjoy playing online poker, a new poker game at
home, or at land-based casinos, these terms will give you much more
insight into the world of poker playing.
Ante – This is the
amount of money put into the pot by each and every player before any
of the cards are dealt before each hand. Antes are used in many
different poker games.
Bet – This is a
wager of a particular amount of money by a poker player. Bets can be
fixed ( For example: $1 and $2) or bets can be spread limits (For
Example: like $1- $10). Spread limit let poker payers bet whatever
amount they want within the limit at any time. Pot limit is another
form of betting. This is when a player can bet any amount up to the
specific limit set in the game house rules. No-limit allows player
to wager any amount of money they have in front of them.
Blind betting –
This is a forced bet by one or more poker players before the cards
are dealt. This takes the place of an ante. The requirement to place
a blind bet rotates around the table where players must take turns
doing so. You will see blind bets in Texas Hold’em games and Omaha
Poker. Most casinos have two types of blind bets, The big blind and
the small blind. Blinds are live bets – so the player who posts them
can raise when it comes time for the action to get back to them –
when it is their turn to do so.
Call – This is when
you match the bet of another player in order to stay in the hand.
Checkraise
– This is when you raise if one of the other players bets. This is
typically done in order to trap players for a bet or two, when you
have a good hand.
Fold - This is when
you simply give your game up and discontinue playing a hand of
poker.
Raise – This is
when you increase the amount of the current bet set by one of you
opponents. This can be done in games that are spread limit, pot
limit or no-limit.
The above terms
when understood properly will set you in the right direct when
becoming a new poker player.
